In 2004 James DeWulf established DeWulf Concrete, a small design operation creating avant-garde, concrete-couture for architects, interior decorators, commercial retail stores, and residential clients. Recognized for his innovative work with custom concrete design, DeWulf quickly became known for his ability to fuse the most advanced concrete technology with beautiful, modern, and natural forms to create functional art.
In addition to his custom work, DeWulf's cutting-edge styles have grown into a full-scale product line available at exclusive retail stores. With a broad range of sinks, tables, fireplaces, outdoors pieces, and coutertops, his products have captured the attention of the design industry. LA Confidential magazine raves, "DeWulf is a renegade in the world of kitchen design, and his raw scrappiness comes through in his bold coutertops and sinks." Distinction magazine stated that, "James DeWulf is raising the bar on concrete design both visually and ecologically with his handmade furnishings." In 2005, James was featured on HGTV and the BBC, and his garden pieces were included in the House Beautiful Magazine Celebrity Showhouse in Los Angeles.
DeWulf is the first and only manufacturer in the United States able to produce a ground-breaking line of five-foot by ten-foot prefabricated concrete slabs. A patented, revolutionary formula creates concrete that is both ten times stronger and denser than traditional concrete, resulting in an ultra-thin product that can be purchased, cut, and finished like marble or stone. Innovative Home magazine describes, "The impressive strength of DeWulf's innovative formula allows for thinner slabs, which can be used to create a unique, sophisticated aesthetic." The slabs are available at Walker Zanger and other select retailer stores.
DeWulf's projects are diverse, ranging from Los Angeles nightclubs and boutique hotels, to architect-driven spaces such as the Malibu Tin House designed by Frank Gehry, and a New York home decorated by Albert Hadley. More than anything, DeWulf and his elite team of artisans have an extreme passion for their medium and enjoy pushing its limits both functionally and aesthetically. "It is this belief that nature and industry can coexist peacefully in the realm of home décor that has inspired the creations of DeWulf Concrete," Innovative Home magazine.
